Identifying Social Issues and Ways to Create Change

The Tragic Gap

The tragic gap is the gap between a hard reality and what you know to be possible such that you long for change towards that possibility.

The Gap I Looked At:

I am standing in the gap of more and more people experiencing food insecurity in my community and a world where everybody has access to nutritional food.

How is this gap currently being addressed in our society?

I know there is a food pantry on IUPUI’s Campus, Paw’s Pantry, which helps students, staff, and faculty that may be experiencing food insecurity

What actions have I taken or hope to take to address this gap?

I have volunteered at a couple different food banks around Indy. Additionally, the IUPUI Urban Gardens that I help manage donate all produce to Paw’s Pantry, so student, staff, and faculty have access to fresh produce

Utilizing strategies from the Wheel of Change, I identified how I could help address the tragic gap between Indianapolis residents experiencing food insecurity to a community where everybody has access to nutritional food year-round, I plan to:

Fundraising, Giving, Philanthropy

1. Organize a neighborhood food drive for my apartment building. This allows easy drop-off for residents who have to leave their building to donate

Student Involvement, Leadership Development

2. Reach out to my peers about setting up a weekly or monthly time when we can all volunteer at a food pantry in Indy.
